The Subway® Story

The 17-year-old entrepreneur

In 1965, Fred DeLuca set out to realize his career aspirations and become a doctor. He was looking for a way to finance his studies and a family friend suggested he open a Submarine sandwich store.

The friend, Dr. Peter Buck, provided a loan of 1,000 US dollars and offered himself as a partner. Thus began a business relationship that would change the fast food world forever.

The first store opened in Bridgeport, Connecticut, in August 1965. The business partners set themselves the goal of opening 32 stores within ten years. DeLuca quickly learned the basics of running a business and the importance of providing quality products and excellent guest service, keeping operating costs low and scouting good locations. These early experiences laid the foundation for successful Subway® restaurants around the world.

Subway®, the franchise company

By 1974, the two partners owned and operated 16 Submarine sandwich stores throughout Connecticut. When they realized that they would not reach their goal of 32 stores in time, they began selling franchises. This was the start of immense growth for the Subway® brand, which continues to this day.

A fresh future

Today, Subway® is the largest sandwich chain in the world with over 44,000 outlets. We are now the first choice for anyone who wants to enjoy quick and nutritious meals for the whole family. From the beginning, DeLuca had a clear vision of what the future of Subway® should look like. Today, we are still driven by the passion to make guests happy with delicious, freshly prepared sandwiches.
